Detail from a side panel of a pall dating from the early 1500s and on display at Fishmongers’ Hall in the City of London.

This panel is ‘constructed of linen that has been entirely covered with embroidery using a variety of gold and gilt metal threads held in place with coloured silk sewing thread (called horsehair) and coloured silk embroidery floss’. Each face alone would have taken two to three days to create.
