Back to the Charterhouse, a haven of tranquillity in central London, which only opened for public tours about three years ago.
Charterhouse School was situated on this site before moving to Godalming in Surrey in 1872. Thackeray was a pupil here and may well have played in these cloisters (he didn’t like his school and called it Slaughterhouse in Vanity Fair).
