These two soft toys – acquired in Helsinki and Budapest and dubbed Finno and Ugric – were guests over Christmas and the New Year.
Here they pose in my study alongside one of my most prized possessions, a Russian–Finnish dictionary bought in Leningrad when I was there in December 1986.
